It has actually been dubbed ‘shiny object syndrome” longer than I’ve been around.. and is well known in many digital communities!
Making it harder than it is for others to stay focused and concentrated on working only on your original project, and not the next BIG IDEA or OPPORTUNITY, that you find!
The Difference Between Copying A Design & Using It As Inspiration
Just like in the past when I’ve talked about, when I’m reselling other freelancers' services at a markup as a side hustle, and I mention that “I always end up2 putting the effort & work in, in some way.. and always end up “earning” my share of the profit, that was made from the markup... well, I do the same thing when I’m selling predesigned templates or other designs.
Although, I’m technically redesigning & selling the website or social media graphic templates...
When I get finished, the template design is at least 98% different than when I started! Not just changing the colors & photos, but the full design layout has changed, the icons & elements have also, all changed!
That’s not copying, it gives you a bit of inspiration, a place to start if you’re not skilled enough to start from scratch as a trained designer, and gives you an idea, and that’s all you need if you have any creativity in you, at all...
Getting Started:
If You’re New To Digital Marketplaces or Using Design Tools — Do This First!
You’ll start by practice creating a few simple, on-brand templates.
It’s important to note right now: Your first few designs will BE HORRIBLE in the beginning, that is 100% normal!
Try using the best design tool on the market — Canva, to find absolutely ANY type of pre-built design template, and tons of design features & capabilities!
It’s really so easy to use! Most design tools have a huge learning curve, however, not the case with Canva.
Choose the type of template that you want to practice redesigning.
It’s important to remember, you’re just playing around and practicing right now. Just get the feel for the design tools, and the Marketplace-style platform, eventually, we’ll worry about getting serious, and uploading our products to the Marketplace, to start selling!
Then after creating an account on TemplateMonster, upload your “pack,” of templates.. be sure to read the different terms for naming your product on TemplateMonster!
If you’re new to these types of Marketplaces, or new to TemplateMonster specifically, take a minute to browse & look around for a while, get used to the platform, categories, and search features, looking how different templates are made, laid out, and how they’re named (How their Title is structured for Search..).
If you aren’t familiar with the sales process, or how to package them, I recommend you purchase a few of the cheaper templates, or maybe some that you actually need for your current or future projects!

Pro Tip: When just browsing be sure to really pay close attention to how they deliver the product, do they have a funnel, an email campaign? If so, go through it, pay attention, and bring all you can with you!
We— y.. you need all the help you can get! So, really pay close attention to the details, and especially the “sales copy” — or the “copywriting” used on the sales page. In other words, what did they say to try, and sell it to you? How did they say it? What tone did they use? The layout of the sales page, and the structure of the words they used.
Starting, the skill of copywriting is super hard to master, and it is expensive to pay a professional copywriter to knock out the copy for your sales funnel... if you can find some inspiration in the copy used while selling the same type of product that’s a bonus and should be leveraged!
Pro Tip II: Be sure to look at the number of sales they have. This isn’t the only determining factor for deciding what product is the best, but the more sales they have — obviously, show the better seller, they are.
